Statement of Purpose:
Systems Administrator and Support Specialist manages all operational aspects of the network and shared networked resources to provide a reliable computing environment for employees and business partners.
Job Duties / Responsibilities:
1. Respond to problems rapidly and communicate appropriately with users during and after periods of down time.
2. Plan and implement hardware and software maintenance, and upgrade activities during non-work hours to maximize network availability during working hours. Maintain logs of all problem resolution, maintenance and upgrade activities.
3. Manage operation of data backup and recovery systems for all network servers and storage devices. Ensure backup operations take place according to an appropriate schedule, completing successfully, and not impacting on users ability to access resources during work hours. Manage magnetic media library and off-site storage procedures. Document backup and recovery procedures, and test procedures on a periodic basis.
4. Manage the operation of all corporate anti-virus systems. Subscribe to list servers for notification of significant threats as they are detected.
5. Manage the operation of the corporate e-mail system and virtual private networks.
6. Maintain awareness of available hardware/software upgrades and fixes, evaluate their appropriateness to business environment.
7. Help select and implement management tools, and establish procedures for monitoring and reporting on the health of the network and attached resource. Collect and analyze activity and performance data, identify and rectify capacity issues, and assist management with capacity planning and developing capital expenditure plans.
8. Develop and maintain appropriate network diagrams and documentation.
9. Create and manage user accounts for shared network resources and applications. Ensure that users are provided with the appropriate security rights. Enforce account password changes according to an appropriate timetable.
10. Configure, purchase, setup and support workstations and printers.
11. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
1. Bachelor s degree in computer science or related discipline
2. 3+ years of related work experience
3. Excellent interpersonal skills, customer-service orientation in a user support environment
4. Attention to detail and organizational ability
5. Ability to develop, document and follow procedures
6. Ability to prioritize and juggle multiple projects and assignments
7. Ability to work effectively independently with minimum supervision
8. Strong analytical and problem solving skills
9. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
DESIRED COMPETENCIES
1. Experience administering Microsoft 2000 Server environment and Active Directory
2. MCSE desirable
3. Experience administering Microsoft SQL Server and Exchange Server products
4. Working knowledge of standard protocols and Internet services such as TCP/ IP, DNS, DHCP, WINS, SNMP, POP3, SMTP, FTP, IPSec
5. Experience with FTP site hosting
6. Experience administering VPN s
7. Experience manage firewall products and security mechanisms that are in place at various layers of the network
8. Experience managing data back-up and recovery environments
9. Experience managing enterprise level anti-virus systems
10. Experience managing all LAN/ WAN hardware (servers, routers, switches, cabling, nics)
11. Experience installing, maintaining, upgrading, and supporting Windows and Mac OS workstation operating systems
