Primary Purpose
The Senior Development Officer serves on the Leadership Gifts Team; the officer s work increases the College's fundraising capacity through the successful cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a pool of prospective donors with the capacity to make gifts in the $100K to $1M range and assessment of selected prospects on an ongoing basis. This position helps to mentor less experienced gift officer and serves as a liaison to one of the College s academic or co-curricular programs.
Responsibilities

Work cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.
*
Maintain oversight of a pool of Leadership Gifts prospects ($100K+), including the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of gifts from $100,000 to $1M.
*
Build and advance strong personal and professional relationships with alumni, parents, and friends of Middlebury that result in philanthropic contributions; serve as a resource, advocate, and spokesperson for development programs at Middlebury.

Work independently and creatively to match donor interests with institutional priorities and develop funding proposals and negotiate and structure complex gifts. Prepare briefings, stewardship plans/letters and other correspondence for prospects, collaborating with CA colleagues and other College staff.

Solicit an annual gift for each prospect, either through a personal visit, solicitation by a volunteer, or through Annual Giving programs. Motivate and support volunteers for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship calls.

Ensure the timely capture and recording of data relating to identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activity relating to the assigned prospect pool.
*
Help mentor new gift officers Maintain in-depth knowledge of the College's campaign priorities, academic and extra curricular programs, and key faculty and administrators; serve as CA liaison to a specific institutional program area.

Collaborate with other CA colleagues on special fundraising projects and/or events.

Other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications:
Education & Training
Bachelors degree required.
Experience
Minimum 7-10 years of progressively responsible fundraising experience, including closing gifts.
Knowledge
*
Knowledge of institutional advancement and advanced fund-raising techniques, including planned giving, essential.
*
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and relational databases; Banner experience preferred.
Other
Strong writing and verbal skills. Ability to motivate and direct senior staff and volunteers. Strong major gift solicitation skills. Ability to work independently and make decisions. Significant travel required. Must handle confidential materials with appropriate discretion.
