Description
The Solutions Architect will ensure alignment between the technology needs of Corporate Actuarial and the prioritization of activities performed by IT. This individual champions requests from across Corporate Actuarial, communicates business specifications to IT to enable the effective design of technology solutions, provides input and approval to the technology aspects of Corporate Actuarial projects, and represents Corporate Actuarial to outside actuarial software vendors.
Key Responsibilities:
Routine Activities
Maintain functional alignment with IT while holding a direct reporting relationship to Corporate Actuarial, representing the interest of the Corporate Actuarial Department to IT
Meet with the Chief Technology Officer for FMG, or his / her designate within IT, on a regular basis to discuss:
o The status of ongoing projects and outstanding IT requests
o Technology-related issues that impact Corporate Actuarial
o Any anticipated changes in Corporate Actuarial processes, methods or systems that may require technology support
o Any other cross-functional issues
Technology Requests
Facilitate, manage, and prioritize technology requests from Corporate Actuarial for delivery to IT to align with business priorities
Work with IT to a) monitor the status of outstanding requests and b) re-prioritize requests as necessary to meet Corporate Actuarial needs
Serve as the Corporate Actuarial liaison for issue resolution on submitted requests
Approve and track completed technology requests after confirming that the IT solution fully and accurately addresses the business need
Support for Solution Development and Systems Changes
Oversee documentation of business specifications from Corporate Actuarial for delivery to IT to support any solution development and / or systems changes that are required
Work with IT to monitor progress against solution development and / or systems changes that impact Corporate Actuarial
Support testing and assessment of IT solutions to determine their suitability for meeting Corporate Actuarial needs
Provide business support to IT for the technical effort related to the development of any application solution, interfaces, conversions, enhancements and workflows which are in scope of the project
Serve as an advisor to IT in the definition of future state technology architecture as it may impact Corporate Actuarial business needs
Actuarial Software
Serve as the Corporate Actuarial point of contact for all external vendors of Corporate Actuarial software, including PolySystems, ALFA and other similar systems, working jointly with the designated IT representative for these systems
Provide support for actuarial systems, including:
o Providing assistance to IT in the testing, approval and installation process for new versions of actuarial software
o Capturing and escalating (as appropriate) issues with actuarial software
o Working with IT to determine appropriate software security access levels for users within Corporate Actuarial
o Serving as the primary point of contact for actuarial assistance and training on actuarial software systems within Corporate Actuarial
Governance
Champion and ensure compliance with enterprise-wide data and systems governance standards throughout the Corporate Actuarial function
Serve as the Corporate Actuarial representative for data and systems governance, which may include serving on governance committees or taking on defined roles with respect to data and systems governance within Corporate Actuarial or the broader enterprise
Requirements
Required:
Ability to work collaboratively across business unit and IT customers in the planning, development, testing, and implementation of high quality technology applications
Prior experience with actuarial valuation and modeling software
Strong Excel and Access skills
Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work independently as well as being a team player
Strong coordination, communication, and influencing skills
Expectation of travel between Texas and Vermont as needed (up to 10%)
Expectation of attendance at SOA meeting at least once per year
Expectation of participation in Boston or Hartford actuarial group or other industry group activity / affiliation
Must be authorized to work in the United States
Highly Desired:
Specific experience with PolySystems, PTS and ALFA actuarial software
Prior experience working collaboratively with IT or on technology-related projects
Familiarity with insurance industry technology architecture standards and common insurance systems and platforms such as SQL Server, DB2, VSAM, SalesForce, and various administrative systems
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics or Actuarial Science field
At least five years of prior actuarial valuation and / or modeling experience
