Backcountry Caretaker/Environmental Education Intern
What would you do?
* Work with Caretaker staff who rove the summits of Vermont's mountains and backcountry ponds.
* Protect endangered species. Talk with hikers about fragile mountain ecosystems and how to minimize impact on it.
* Live in the mountains. Staff beautiful and fragile sites on the Long Trail and Appalachian Trail. Educate backpackers in Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.
* Learn trail maintenance, campsite management, and operation of composting outhouses.
* Help with the many jobs that go into taking care of the Long Trail and public land - inventorying and replacing trail signs, supporting volunteers, collecting research data.
Aside from experience, what is the "pay"? Housing. GMC is happy to work with school faculty so intern may earn school credit.
You should think about applying if you are . . . Enthusiastic about living outdoors. Desire to learn about natural history, teaching, and interpretation. Interested in developing ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of trail users. Must have some backpacking experience and some First Aid training. Must be at least 18 years old.
When would you work? This internship is perfect for people who can work only part time or for part of the season. The Caretaker season is late May through late October. Interns can set up a schedule that works for them (such as full time for one month - or two days a week all summer. Full time is ok, too!)
